Tye Kartye's Rapid Rise: A Rangers Story
Tye Kartye's journey to the New York Rangers was nothing short of extraordinary. Just a day before, he was an unsigned free agent, but by 11 a.m. on Friday, he was claimed off waivers by the Rangers. And within 25.5 hours, the 24-year-old winger made his much-anticipated debut at Madison Square Garden.
Kartye's experience was surreal, as he recounted, "It was pretty crazy. I had to hustle to make a 2:45 p.m. flight, pack quickly, and then arrive here. It was a nice surprise; I just slept, woke up, and stepped onto the ice."
This wasn't Kartye's first claim this season; he joined the Rangers after Vincent Iorio was claimed at the end of January. The team's strategy is clear: they're seeking young talent with potential, and Kartye fits the bill as a skilled skater for their bottom six.
In his debut, Kartye lined up with Noah Laba and Brendan Brisson on the third unit, logging 12:39 of ice time and registering two shots on goal. He envisioned his role as a physical presence, forechecking, and positioning himself effectively. He also expressed his desire to contribute offensively whenever possible.
Kartye's performance in his third NHL season has been impressive, with three goals and five assists in 41 games. Head coach Mike Sullivan praised his arrival, stating, "He came as advertised. His motor and ability to help us in the puck pursuit game, forechecking, and disrupting plays are exactly what we needed. He has some physicality, and while we didn't use him on the penalty kill, I anticipate him being involved in that aspect moving forward."
Brendan Brisson, in his second game for the Rangers, recorded his first point with a secondary assist on Taylor Raddysh's game-tying goal in the third period. Scott Morrow, a defenseman, returned to the ice after a January 31 absence, playing his 29th game of the 2025-26 season and the 45th of his NHL career.
Iorio, claimed off waivers from the Sharks on January 31, was scratched for the first time since joining the Rangers. Goalie Igor Shesterkin, with his 36th start of the season, made 31 saves out of 32 shots, securing his 18th victory of the 2025-26 campaign.
