The LSU Tigers posted three school records during the Auburn Last Chance Meet, as six Tigers traveled to Alabama with the aim of clinching NCAA Championship qualifying times.
Two LSU breststroke specialists, Volodymyr Lisovets and Guilherme Camossato, each broke their program’s record on Friday night. Lisovets clocked a 51.13 in the 100 breast, surpassing former Tiger Mitch Mason’s 51.55 mark. That time places Lisovets 12th nationally for the season, effectively earning him an NCAA Championship invitation for the 6'7" Ukrainian sophomore.
Auburn's Uros Zivanovic, a Serbian sophomore, shaved four tenths off his lifetime best and six tenths off his season best in the finals of the 100 breast, touching in 51.10. That performance should secure his NCAA Invite as well.
Camossato also shaved time in the 200 breast, posting 1:52.73 to erase his own school record set earlier this season at the SEC Championships. His current NCAA ranking sits around 30th, which makes an NCAA invite unlikely given the automatic qualifiers—though there remains a glimmer of possibility.
On Saturday, Grace Palmer shattered the women’s 200 breaststroke record with a 2:07.55, breaking Niamh Robinson’s 2020 record of 2:08.37. Palmer had previously posted 2:09.07 at the SEC Championships and finished fourth; the two-second improvement now positions her at 16th in the nation for the season, securing an NCAA Championship Invite.
Other notable NCAA-qualifying developments
- Auburn’s time trial of the 200 free relay aimed at extra chances for Kalle Makinen. He split 19.11 in prelims and 19.10 in finals for the relay, then swam 19.13 in the 50 free time trial after prelims in the 100 free. His season best remains 19.09, ranking him 40th nationally.
- Makinen returned Saturday to post 45.22 in the 100 back prelims, shaving 0.12 seconds off his season best and moving to about 32nd in the NCAA rankings. With many top competitors likely to skip this event in March, he could still land an unlikely, yet not impossible, invitation.
- NC State’s Olivia Nel shaved a lifetime best 47.36 in the 100 free final on Saturday, dropping roughly a half-second off her season best and moving to 20th nationally. This likely secures her a third straight NCAA Championship appearance as an individual qualifier. Cassie Moses of NC State sits near the edge of an invite ranking at 36th.
- Auburn freshman Luke Bedsole improved in the 200 fly to 1:41.33, rising to 28th in the NCAA for the season and staying on the bubble when Automatic Qualifiers are factored in.
- Auburn’s Maston Ballew posted 1:52.72 in prelims and 1:52.10 in finals in the 200 breast, climbing to 19th in the NCAA. While not an ironclad lock with a few Last Chance meets still on the horizon, this should move him toward his first NCAA Championship appearance.
- The Auburn women used their home pool to time trial a 200 free relay in 1:28.25, just under the NCAA A standard. Although they had already surpassed the standard at SECs (1:27.81), Auburn pushed aggressive starts, recording -0.07 reaction times on the final two legs, and avoided any disqualifications.
